Do Canadians vacation in New Jersey to find 'Snooki'?

Gary Doer, The Ambassador of Canada (Left)

We don’t know if any of the 25 million Canadians that vacation in The United States go to New Jersey to meet ‘Snooki’, but The Ambassador of Canada, Gary Doer, emphasized that Jersey is a favorite destination.  That, of course, may have something to do with sharing the stage with New Jersey Governor Chris Christie at The Governors and Ambassadors World Trade Reception at The Willard Hotel as part of The Governors Annual Winter Weekend in Washington

Power Party.

Power Party

If you want to follow the real power in Washington, get in line for any party hosted by Ambassador of Kuwait Salem Al-Sabah and his stunning wife Rima.

The State Department is not the only place in town to get briefed on foreign policy; the Al-Sabahs offer a viable alternative as they did the night before President Obama addressed the nation on the situation in Libya. While party chatter is more discreet, if you pay attention you can read between the lines.

CHUCKS

You may not know who Paul Cohn is, but If you’ve ever lit up a cigar at Old Glory, gotten picked up at J. Paul’s, dished at Paolo’s or had hummus at Neyla, then send him a thank-you note.
Restaurateur Paul Cohn didn’t make the real cover of Washingtonian this month, but his good friend, journalist Harry Jaffe, made sure he was covered for his 70th birthday, which was celebrated with a Black Tie and Chucks Rock ‘n' Roll party at the Washington Convention Center.

An Old Country With a Young Soul

An Old Country With a Young Soul

Amongst tapestries centuries old and gilded paintings, guests at the Embassy of Spain were introduced to the new generations of young creative talent via the spring 2011 Spanish cultural program.
“For us, this is a special day,” said Ambassador Jorge Dezcallar, “not only for the the new cultural program, but because Spain has much to offer. And, well, I don’t want to brag but [we also have] a lot of creative energy,” he added, referring to the dramatic World Cup win by Spain over the Netherlands in the 116th minute, when Andres Iniesta scored a goal and it ended at 1-0. Niteside was at the embassy then and offers a look back here.

Fargione's ELISIR makes it into Elle

YEAS & NAYS

People, Politics, and Power

Chef Enzo Fargione has been busy since the culinary talent parted ways with Teatro Goldoni, and the popular fashion glossy Elle Magazine has taken notice. In the March issue, the mag makes mention of Fargione's plans to open his own "power-lunch-appropriate Italian bistro," ELISIR in the District's Penn Quarter.

"I'm itching to open because I haven't been behind the stove in over a year," Fargione told Yeas & Nays. The tasting-menu-style restaurant will feature a bar that will seat 20 to 25 people, three glass-enclosed wine cellars, a semi-private event room, a regular dining room with a semi-open kitchen and an observation deck equipped with HD cameras for live streaming of his dinner services. It's a unique concept and one that Fargione hopes people will like.
"There is a boom across the country in tasting menus and I believe now is the time to hammer on it," he said.

Kate Betts didn't set out to be a fashion writer.

“I was a senior at Princeton and all of my friends were interviewing with Goldman Sachs or going to law school," said Betts. "I remember sitting in the cubicle at the career services office with Grey Advertising or something like that when I thought, I can’t do this."
Now she's the author of a new book, "Everyday Icon: Michelle Obama and the Power of Style," which hit stands Feb. 8. The volume's been garnering plenty of praise for its exploration of the first ladies' personal fashion histories.

Everyday Icon: Michelle Obama and the Power of Style

'In many ways, she's similar to Jacqueline Kennedy,' said author Kate Betts. 'They both came to the White House as young mothers and both have a fashion fluency.'

Shirts off to Rep. Chris Lee (R-N.Y.) for keeping everyone's Tweetdecks buzzing at the Washington Press Club Foundation's 67th Annual Congressional Dinner.

It’s being called the "speed scandal."

If you were on your way to The Mandarin Hotel last night, by the time you got there you already knew that Rep. Chris Lee (R-N.Y.) had abruptly resigned from Congress after Gawker.com revealed he had sent a shirtless photo to a woman in response to a Craigslist ad.

“Sexiest man alive? You betcha!" said Ambassador of Ireland Michael Collins, reading from the latest issue of Washington Life magazine. “I thought it was me,” he joked to his guests at the residence Monday night, “until I noticed they were referring to Gabriel Byrne.” Byrne recently launched the Imagine Ireland arts project at the embassy.

"By 1970, Everything Was More Complicated"

Tremolo Productions: Morgan Neville and James Taylor

“Troubadours” opened at the West End Cinema (2301 M St. N.W.) over the weekend after a successful run at Sundance. The film follows the careers of James Taylor and Carole King amidst the burgeoning singer-songwriter culture of the early 1970s.

Niteside caught up with director Morgan Neville and asked why he was drawn to music as his subject and in particular, the music of the '60s and '70s.

Sexist man alive? You Betcha!

Gabriel Bryne with Ambassador Michael Collins

Actor did just that at a party in his honor at the residence of Ambassador Michael and to launch “Imagine Ireland: A year of Irish arts in America 2011.”

“It’s a complimentary description,” he explained.  “It’s harmless and don’t know why anyone would be offended.”  What he doesn’t like being called is dark and brooding. “In Ireland,“ he said in a previous interview, “brooding is a term we use for hens. A brooding hen is supposed to lay eggs. Every time somebody says ‘He’s dark and brooding,’ I think: ‘He’s about to lay an egg.’”

Year of the Rabbit-Snake Mutant?

Year of the Rabbit-Snake Mutant?

It may be the Year of the Rabbit, but there were a lot of snakes and rats in the room at Ping Pong Dim Sum’s Chinese New Year’s celebration.

“I am the Year of the Snake,” said photographer Pat Ryan. “The year of the snake is vain, and high-tempered with a tendency towards physical beauty. I know that from reading Chinese placemats for many years. That’s my sign. It really doesn't match me at all, but that’s what they say I am.”
