We could start this prose by saying “on Wednesday evening, The Ronald Reagan Building went to the dogs.”  But we won’t, because that’s been used so often, it’s become trite.  Instead, let’s just say “doggies and Champagne?  Sweet!”

Wednesday evening saw the unleashing of the 11th annual Sugar and Champagne Affair at The Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center.  The event brings together over 60 of the area’s top toques from restaurants which included Equinox and Watershed, Central Michel Richard, Bastille, Marcel’s, Restaurant Eve, Ris, The Daily Dish and more; along with Champagne and spirits producers and mixologists, all sampling their talents and products to guests—of both the two and four legged varieties.

For more than a decade, hosts Chef Todd and Ellen Gray have hosted the consistently sold-out event which benefits The Washington Humane Society and honors law enforcement and animal control officers, humane educators and community humane heroes.

Sugar and Champagne was emceed this year by FRESH 94.7’s Tommy McFly (along with his poochie, Chip, his notably silent, yet silky soft partner, who rocked a tasteful full body fur coat).

Let’s face it, there’s nothing better than looking out on a sea of cocktail clad humanity combined with smartly attired caninity, all circulating the Reagan Building atrium.  Glasses clinked, plates were full and wagging tails abounded.  It must have been interesting getting all those leashes collars through the metal detectors, but it was yet another fete not to be missed, and all for a good cause.

The Washington Humane Society, the only Congressionally-chartered animal welfare agency in the United States. has been the leading voice for animals in the District of Columbia since 1870.

The Washington Humane Society provides comfort and care to nearly 30,000 animals each year through its broad range of programs and services including sheltering, adoption, humane law enforcement, spay and neuter, humane education, human-animal rehabilitation programs and lost and found services.
