Mariel Hemingway, national spokesperson for Wellness Week (March 19-25), was in town to invite Americans of all ages to take charge of their health by focusing on prevention.

Influenced by the history of her famous family, she has been passionate about wellness for over two decades.

"Coming from a family with a history of health issues and having struggled with eating and weight issues myself, I made it a priority to find balance in my life, to become mentally and physically healthy and also help others to do the same.

I’ve done that through books, DVDS, and speaking about the importance of prevention and taking care of yourself.  My personal journey to wellness has taught me that creating a healthier body and mind allows us to do more and live a longer, more vibrant and meaningful life.

Taking care of yourself and nurturing yourself is preventative medicine in my book -- and that’s what Wellness Week is all about. That’s why I am so proud to be a part of Wellness Week," she told us.

The Academy Award nominated “Manhattan” actress/writer was joined by members of Congress at the Cannon House Office Building to launch the project.

"We were thrilled to be joined by Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey of California and Congressman Tom Petri of Wisconsin, who both spoke at the Wellness Week Pledge Kickoff event on Capitol Hill. We were also honored to meet with Senator Barbara Boxer and Congressman Joe Pitts while we were on The Hill.  We are looking forward to working with all of them and other national leaders on making wellness and prevention a national priority," she said.

We asked her how she felt about First Lady Michelle Obama's health initiatives, especially with children.

"I wholeheartedly support the First Lady’s efforts to promote wellness and healthy eating, especially among children. I think we can all agree – Democrats, Republicans, and Independents - that prevention is critical - to both the health of our nation and to our own personal health.

The Wellness Week Pledge supports and builds on the First Lady’s campaign by showing Americans of every age that it is easy and possible to make simple changes, from eating a healthy breakfast to choosing the stairs over the elevator, that lead to lifestyle improvements that stick."
